Cheap campervan hire Sydney

SYD NSW
  • Depot 23-25 Erskine Rd, Caringbah NSW 2229
  • Suburb Caringbah, New South Wales
  • Watch Depot sits well south — check transfer time

The depot is at Caringbah, well south of the city. That single fact decides whether your first day is coastal or stuck on the Princes Highway.

Where the depot sits, and why it matters

Erskine Road in Caringbah sits in the Sutherland Shire, roughly 25 km south of the CBD and a short drive from the southern edge of Royal National Park. Nothing about the location is central, and that is the point: you never drive north into Sydney traffic to leave.

If you land at Mascot, budget the transfer south. It is a train ride plus a short walk, or a taxi that crosses the city in the wrong direction at the wrong time of day. Collecting late in the afternoon means your first night is local, not scenic.

Counter hours at Caringbah are ordinary suburban hours, and the Sydney campervan hire page lists them by season — worth checking before a flight is booked around a collection.

First morning: three directions, three different trips

  • South Royal National Park is the closest real drive — the coast road through Bundeena and Otford, then on to the Sea Cliff Bridge and Wollongong. Sealed the whole way and short enough to do properly in a day.
  • West The Hume Highway toward the Southern Highlands, then the Illawarra escarpment. Useful when you want cool air and rainforest without a long haul.
  • North The Pacific run to Newcastle and Port Stephens, but only after crossing Sydney. Do this if the coast north is the whole point, not as a casual first move.

Practical notes for a Sydney start

  • Toll roads Sydney's motorways are mostly tolled and the charges are distance-based. A van with an e-tag arrangement is easier than stopping to pay by plate.
  • Fuel Fill before leaving the Shire. Stations thin out inside Royal National Park and along the coast road.
  • Beach parking Councils along the coast restrict long vehicles near beaches in summer. Read the signs rather than assuming a van fits.
  • Wildlife Dawn and dusk on the park roads is when wallabies move. Driving those hours at speed is how hire vans get damaged.
  • City driving If you must go into the CBD, do it outside 7-9am and 4-6pm. A campervan in peak-hour Sydney is a bad use of a day.

Where to sleep the first night

Stay south on the first night. Camping areas around Royal National Park and the Illawarra let you start the coast road at daylight instead of fighting out of the suburbs.

If you collected early and want distance, the drive to Jervis Bay is realistic in an afternoon and puts you somewhere worth waking up.

A finish in Melbourne is priced through one-way hire to Melbourne and removes the two days a return up the Hume would cost.

Is the Sydney depot near the airport?

No. Caringbah is south of the airport, about half an hour by road outside peak, longer in traffic. Allow for the transfer when you book a flight.

Can I avoid driving through Sydney entirely?

Yes, if you head south or west. The depot's position means the coast and the Southern Highlands are reachable without crossing the city.

Is Royal National Park worth a full day?

It is worth more than a rushed morning. The coast track, the Figure Eight Pools area and the driving route through to Otford all compete for time.

Other depots worth comparing

Sydney rewards a southern start and punishes a northern one. If the coast north of Newcastle is the point of the trip, collecting in Brisbane and driving south removes a border crossing and a day of traffic.

  • Melbourne Ringwood sits east of the city, good for Gippsland, awkward for a Great Ocean Road start.
  • Brisbane Inner-south Woolloongabba puts the Pacific Motorway north and the Gold Coast south both close.
  • Perth Bentley sits south of the river: Margaret River is easy, the Pinnacles mean crossing the city.
  • Adelaide Bowden is north of the CBD, so the Flinders Ranges run starts without crossing Adelaide.
