Cheap campervan hire Broome
BME WA- Depot Unit 3, 3 Farrell St, Broome WA 6725
- Suburb Broome, Western Australia
- Watch Confirm one-way conditions before driving out
Farrell Street is minutes from Cable Beach and a long way from anywhere else — which is the whole appeal and the whole problem.
Where the depot sits, and why it matters
The depot is in town, close to Cable Beach and the airport, in a town that exists because of pearling and now runs on tourism. It is small enough that you are never far from the water and large enough to stock up properly.
Broome is the gateway to the Kimberley. The Dampier Peninsula is close and mostly sealed; the Gibb River Road is a different proposition that needs a vehicle and a plan suited to it.
Ten minutes covers the beach, the airport and the supermarket in a town this size, so the only real variable is the counter, and the Broome campervan hire page sets out its seasonal hours and wet-season closures.
First morning: three directions, three different trips
- North The Dampier Peninsula — Beagle Bay, Lombadina, Cape Leveque. Increasingly sealed, still remote, and one of the best short trips from any Australian town.
- East The Gibb River Road into the Kimberley, which is unsealed for hundreds of kilometres and not a casual decision.
- South The Great Northern Highway toward Port Hedland and Karijini — long, hot and rewarding if you have the days for it.
The Gibb is unsealed for hundreds of kilometres and needs a vehicle the terms actually allow on it, so it is a separate booking from a campervan — 4x4 hire Broome is where that starts.
Practical notes for a Broome start
- Tides The Kimberley runs on tides. Beaches and roads that are passable at low tide are not at high tide, and the difference can be hours.
- Wet season The Gibb and many peninsula roads close in the wet. A dry-season trip is a different itinerary from a wet-season one.
- Fuel Fill in Broome and again at every opportunity on the peninsula. There is very little in between.
- Crocodiles Saltwater crocodiles are present in creeks and estuaries. Signs are literal, not decorative.
- Heat Build-up season is punishing. Plan driving for the morning and swimming for the middle of the day.
Tides decide the peninsula more than distance does, and where the vehicle is permitted is in the campervan hire in Western Australia conditions, which is the reading to do before the Gibb is on the plan.
Where to sleep the first night
Cable Beach caravan parks are the obvious first night, and there is nothing wrong with that — the sunset is the reason people come.
Heading up the peninsula, plan your nights around tides and fuel rather than distance. The two do not always agree.
Can I drive the Gibb River Road in a campervan?
Only if the vehicle is suitable and permitted. It is a serious unsealed road with river crossings, and standard two-wheel-drive vans are not built for it.
How far is Cape Leveque?
Roughly 200 km from Broome, mostly on the peninsula road. It is a long half-day, and the last section varies with conditions.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season, roughly May to October. The wet brings heat, humidity and road closures that change what is reachable.
Other depots worth comparing
Broome pairs with Darwin across the Kimberley and with Perth down the coast. Both are one-way runs where the direction usually decides the price more than the dates.
- Sydney Caringbah is on the southern edge, so Royal National Park and Wollongong come before city traffic.
- Melbourne Ringwood sits east of the city, good for Gippsland, awkward for a Great Ocean Road start.
- Brisbane Inner-south Woolloongabba puts the Pacific Motorway north and the Gold Coast south both close.
- Perth Bentley sits south of the river: Margaret River is easy, the Pinnacles mean crossing the city.
