Cheap campervan hire Cairns

CNS QLD
  • Depot 75 Sheridan St, Cairns City QLD 4870
  • Suburb Cairns City, Queensland
  • Watch Confirm wet-season road access before booking

The reef, the rainforest and the Tablelands are all a short drive from the counter — and almost none of the first morning goes to leaving town.

Where the depot sits, and why it matters

Sheridan Street cuts through Cairns City, a few blocks back from the Esplanade. That is a better starting position than it sounds: you are north of the airport, south of the road to Port Douglas, and already on the correct side of town for the Cook Highway.

The practical consequence is that almost none of your first morning disappears crossing the city. Collect before lunch and you can be past Smithfield and into the cane fields by early afternoon.

Whether that advantage survives depends on the hour you collect, and cheap campervan hire Cairns sets the counter times out by season.

First morning: three directions, three different trips

  • North The Cook Highway to Port Douglas, then the Daintree River crossing and on to Cape Tribulation. Sealed the whole way, and slow behind caravans, so leave early.
  • West Up the Gillies or Kuranda Range to the Atherton Tablelands — cooler, greener, waterfalls and crater lakes, and the better choice when the coast is raining.
  • South The coastal run toward Townsville, with the waterfalls and cassowary country around Mission Beach on the way. The direction most people drive.

The Bloomfield Track past Cape Tribulation is 4WD only, so a plan that crosses the Daintree ferry and keeps going is a different booking from a sealed-road trip — 4WD hire Cairns covers it.

Practical notes for a Cairns start

  • Water crossings Several roads north of the Daintree need a ferry. Check times and cost before committing to a crossing late in the day.
  • Fuel Fill in Cairns or Smithfield. Stations thin out sharply past Mossman and prices climb with distance.
  • Crocodiles Signs at creeks and beaches are not decorative. Swim where locals swim, not where the water looks best.
  • Stingers In the warmer months swimming off the beaches is restricted. Use netted areas where they exist and ask locally.
  • Parking Cairns City is tight for anything long. Shop and leave rather than circling the Esplanade blocks.

Where to sleep the first night

Collected late? Stay close. Caravan parks south of the city and around Smithfield are the sensible first stop and let you start north or west next morning without retracing ground.

Collected early and want somewhere worth waking up? Drive the Cook Highway while there is still light. Past Port Douglas you get rainforest on one side, reef on the other, and campsites that put you at the Daintree crossing before the day trippers.

The first night belongs north of the city, because Smithfield is the last easy turn, and the Cairns to Daintree route notes are worth reading before dry-season weeks when the campsites go first.

Do I need a 4WD out of Cairns?

Not for the Daintree, Port Douglas or the Tablelands — those are sealed and a two-wheel-drive van handles them. A 4WD only matters if your plan includes unsealed tracks.

How long does the Daintree crossing take?

The drive from Cairns to the river is roughly two hours without stops. The ferry itself is short, but the queue is the variable — mid-morning in peak season is the worst of it.

Is the wet season a bad time to visit?

It is a different trip, not a worse one. The coast is hot and wet, some roads close, and the reef is at its best. The Tablelands stay more usable than the coast when it rains.

What should I buy before leaving Cairns?

Water in bulk, an esky if the van has no fridge, and insect repellent. City supermarkets are cheaper than anything on the Cook Highway.

Other depots worth comparing

Cairns is the northern end of the east coast run. Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne are all one-way deliveries from here, and the price falls as the distance grows in the direction the fleet wants to travel.

  • Sydney Caringbah is on the southern edge, so Royal National Park and Wollongong come before city traffic.
  • Melbourne Ringwood sits east of the city, good for Gippsland, awkward for a Great Ocean Road start.
  • Brisbane Inner-south Woolloongabba puts the Pacific Motorway north and the Gold Coast south both close.
  • Perth Bentley sits south of the river: Margaret River is easy, the Pinnacles mean crossing the city.
