Cheap campervan hire Darwin
DWN NT- Depot 15 Cousin Street, Winnellie NT 0820
- Suburb Winnellie, Northern Territory
- Watch Confirm dry-season availability for your dates
Winnellie is an industrial suburb east of the centre, which puts Kakadu and Litchfield ahead of you and adds nothing to the start.
Where the depot sits, and why it matters
Cousin Street in Winnellie sits in a light-industrial area east of Darwin's centre, close to the airport and on the right side of town for the Arnhem Highway. It is not somewhere you would spend an afternoon, and it does not pretend to be.
What the position buys you is a clean exit. Kakadu, Litchfield and the Stuart Highway south all begin without a city crossing, which in a place where the dry season is short is worth real time.
Winnellie is not an afternoon out and does not pretend to be, but it puts you on the Arnhem Highway without a city crossing, and the hours on the campervan hire Darwin page shorten through the wet.
First morning: three directions, three different trips
- East The Arnhem Highway to Kakadu — Jabiru, Ubirr, Nourlangie. Sealed, and a solid few hours before you are anywhere worth stopping.
- South-east Litchfield National Park, which is closer than Kakadu and easier as a first day. Waterfalls, plunge pools and a loop road that suits a van.
- South The Stuart Highway toward Katherine, then on to Nitmiluk Gorge. Long, straight and hot, with roadhouses spaced widely.
Practical notes for a Darwin start
- Wet season The dry season is the trip. In the wet, many park roads close, some waterfalls become unsafe, and the heat and humidity are their own obstacle.
- Crocodiles Saltwater crocodiles are in the rivers andbillabongs. Swimming anywhere that is not explicitly signed as safe is a bad idea.
- Fuel Fill in Darwin and again at the park entrances. The gaps are long and prices reflect the isolation.
- Heat Even in the dry season the middle of the day is punishing. Drive early, swim at midday, move again in the afternoon.
- Permits Some Aboriginal land and park areas need permits. Check before planning a route through them.
Kakadu's sealed road reaches Ubirr and Nourlangie, but Jim Jim Falls is 4WD access in the dry season only, and 4WD hire Darwin is the version to price if that is the point of the trip.
Where to sleep the first night
Stay in Darwin or close to it the first night — the markets and the waterfront are worth an evening, and you start fresh for Kakadu.
For Litchfield, camping inside the park puts you at the falls before the day visitors arrive, which changes the experience entirely.
The markets and the waterfront are worth the first evening in town, and a Broome finish is a different plan from a loop down the Stuart, priced through one-way hire to Broome.
How far is Kakadu from Darwin?
The park boundary is about two hours' drive, and the main sites are further in. It is a multi-day trip rather than a day out.
Is Litchfield better than Kakadu for a short trip?
For two or three days, often yes. It is closer, the roads are easier, and the waterfalls are the highlight rather than one part of a much bigger park.
Can I swim in the waterfalls?
In designated areas in the dry season, usually yes. Outside that, and anywhere without a sign saying it is safe, no — the crocodile risk is real.
Other depots worth comparing
Darwin is the northern end of two long routes — down the Stuart to Alice, or across to Broome. Which one is cheaper depends on where the vans piled up that season.
- Sydney Caringbah is on the southern edge, so Royal National Park and Wollongong come before city traffic.
- Melbourne Ringwood sits east of the city, good for Gippsland, awkward for a Great Ocean Road start.
- Brisbane Inner-south Woolloongabba puts the Pacific Motorway north and the Gold Coast south both close.
- Perth Bentley sits south of the river: Margaret River is easy, the Pinnacles mean crossing the city.
