Cheap campervan hire Exmouth
EXM WA- Depot 10 Maley St, Exmouth WA 6707
- Suburb Exmouth, Western Australia
- Watch Check seasonal closures on Cape Range roads
Maley Street is in the middle of a very small town, which makes the depot easy and the fuel planning hard.
Where the depot sits, and why it matters
Exmouth is a small town on the North West Cape, built around a former naval base. The depot is on Maley Street, central enough that you can walk to a shop and drive to the reef within the hour.
The isolation is the whole story. Cape Range National Park is at the doorstep, Ningaloo is along the coast, and the next substantial town south is a long drive on a road with very little on it.
A shop is a short walk and the reef is an hour away, which is the whole geography of the place, and the campervan hire Exmouth page gives the counter hours by season.
First morning: three directions, three different trips
- West Cape Range National Park and the Ningaloo coast — Turquoise Bay, Oyster Stacks, the gorge country inland. The reason people come.
- North The tip of the cape and the lighthouse, with the reef on one side and the gulf on the other.
- South The Minilya Road to Carnarvon and Shark Bay, which is a long day and needs fuel planning rather than optimism.
Sealed road gets you to Turquoise Bay and Yardie Creek, but the tracks past them and the station beaches need clearance, which is 4x4 hire Exmouth territory rather than a campervan's.
Practical notes for a Exmouth start
- Fuel Fill in Exmouth before entering the park. There is nothing inside Cape Range, and the round trip is easily a day.
- Park entry Cape Range needs a park pass and some roads close seasonally. Check before you plan a loop.
- Heat Summer is extreme and many businesses close. The cooler months are the season for a reason.
- Water Carry your own. The park has few facilities and none you should rely on.
- Snorkelling The currents at some sites are stronger than they look. Ask locally which bays suit the conditions on the day.
There is no fuel inside Cape Range and Turquoise Bay is a day rather than a stop, so fill before the gate and check the Western Australia campervan hire conditions if the plan continues to Carnarvon.
Where to sleep the first night
Camp inside Cape Range if you can get a site — the park campgrounds put you on the reef at dawn, which is the best hour of the day there.
If the park is full, Exmouth itself is a short drive and a reasonable fallback rather than a wasted night.
How far is the reef from town?
The nearest snorkelling beaches in Cape Range are a short drive from Exmouth. The famous sites are further into the park.
Do I need a 4WD?
For the sealed roads and main beaches, no. Some of the park's tracks and the more remote camps need one, and conditions vary by season.
When should I visit?
The cooler months, roughly May to September. Summer heat closes businesses and makes camping uncomfortable.
Other depots worth comparing
Ningaloo is the reason to be here, and the road back south is the same road in. Perth is the obvious pairing either way, so the direction matters more than the city.
- Sydney Caringbah is on the southern edge, so Royal National Park and Wollongong come before city traffic.
- Melbourne Ringwood sits east of the city, good for Gippsland, awkward for a Great Ocean Road start.
- Brisbane Inner-south Woolloongabba puts the Pacific Motorway north and the Gold Coast south both close.
- Perth Bentley sits south of the river: Margaret River is easy, the Pinnacles mean crossing the city.
